We all say something wrong occasionally or take the wrong side in the argument, but when you’re a celebrity it’s way more embarrassing because everyone knows about this. However, there’s always a way to course-correct, or apologize for your wrongdoings. But some celebs really suck at apologizing. They issue a public apology to clear their name, but they don’t mean a word of it, which is immediately obvious to the public. Here are a few cases of such clearly insincere celeb apologies.
1. Gina Rodriguez
The Janes the Virgin posted a video of herself on Instagram singing along to Ready or Not by the Fugees and she sang a racial slur. The public pointed out how that was wrong of her and instead of owning up and admitting her wrongdoing she “apologized” on Instagram stories by saying that she’s sorry if she offended anyone by singing along to a song that she loves and grew up listening to. Yeah, Gina, that sounded more like an excuse than an apology.
2. Demi Lovato
Demi once blasted a yogurt shop on Instagram stories for having sugar-free options. As someone who suffered with an eating disorder she said she found the sugar-free label triggering and as though it was glorifying diet culture. The shop replied saying they carry various options for people with special dietary needs, so they have products that are suitable for diabetics, celiacs and vegans too. When the public started defending the store Demi attempted to backtrack by saying that she’s not coming after a store, she just thinks it would make more sense to label foods as those suitable for different dietary needs instead of “sugar free”. She said that she walked into a situation that didn’t sit right with her so she spoke up, and she feels good about that decision. Again, that’s not how you apologize when you’re clearly in the wrong. This is nitpicking and finding a way out of something you clearly misunderstood and misinterpreted.
3. Erica Pelosini
When she was photographed topless on a boat with Jack Brooksbank, Princess Eugene’s husband, she said smth along the lines of “I know it looks bad for Jack and his family, since he was there with three woman and his wife wasn’t there, I don’t usually go topless, but really it’s just that my bikini got wet and I decided to take it off.” Like what? She also decided to impart some wisdom on Princess Eugene about how she should feel about the whole situation, saying “If I gave birth 5 months ago and I saw my husband enjoying some time in the sun I’d be happy for him”. That’s just bizarre.
4. Vanessa Hudgens
At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic Vanessa posted an Instagram story saying that undermined the importance of lockdown and the virus in general. She said “Even if everybody gets [Covid-19], like yeah, people are going to die, which is terrible, but inevitable?”. After the public rightly got offended she said that her words were misinterpreted and it’s a crazy world we live in. That obviously wasn’t the apology people wanted from her, so she then posted another one where she said that the important thing is that she’s in lockdown and she hopes everyone else is keeping safe too.
5. Cardi B
Cardi got her whole family of 12 kids and 25 adults under one roof to celebrate Thanksgiving in the midst of the pandemic and bragged about it on Twitter. The public was obviously outraged, because most people spent 2020 in lockdown, isolating, and not seeing their loved ones, while Cardi decided to brag. When she saw the reaction she went on to tweet that she wasn’t trying to brag or offend anyone, she was just happy to see her family for the first time since the pandemic started and it made her feel happy and uplifted and she just wanted to share. She also mentioned that she spent a lot of money getting everyone tested to be safe, which again came off as bragging. To that she replied that people were trying really hard to get offended by her actions.
6. Joseph Tyler
When Twenty One Pilots singer Tyler Joseph was asked to use his platform to spread the word about Black Lives Matter, he decided to joke around by posting a photo of himself in platform shoes saying “You guys keep asking me to use my platforms. Feels good to dust these bad boys off”. After the backlash he still said that he thought his joke was funny and he’s doubling down on it. After the second backlash he finally got the message and said that he understands that his joke was insensitive and he does support the Black Lives Matter movement.
7. Doja Cat
Doja Cat got into trouble when people dug up her old tweets where she used a homophobic slur. Instead of apologizing she went on to say that she’s used that slur thousands of times in her life but that doesn’t mean she hates gays. A very weird take, but ok. She later went on to tweet that she used horrible derogatory and hateful words towards people out of ignorance. Which isn’t exactly an apology. These tweets have since been deleted.
8. Kristen Stewart
Kristen was photographed kissing a director of the movie she was working on (Snow White and the Huntsman). Both Kristen and Rupert Sanders were in relationships at the time. Rupert was married and his wife was actually playing Kristen character’s mother in the movie, and Kristen was in a long term relationship with her Twilight co-star Robert Pattinson. In her apology she said that she’s sorry for hurting and embarrassing people that are close to her and that this momentary indiscretion has jeopardized the most important thing in her life and the most important person — Rob, who she loves a lot. What a weird time she chose to profess your love for someone you cheated on.
