Meghan Markle’s Former Bodyguard Dishes on Rocky Start To Royal Life

Steve Davies, Meghan Markle’s former bodyguard in Toronto, has finally revealed startling truths about the “Suits” actress. Frustrated with the rumors, Davies has confirmed that he finds Markle to be a kind person who got off to a bad start when she was introduced to royal life. Even though she was already a celebrity, the Duchess of Sussex wasn’t accustomed to the same public scrutiny from the UK tabloids and other sources as royals.

NBC hired Davies in 2018 while Markle was still filming “Suits” in Canada before her summer wedding to Prince Harry. The bodyguard told In Touch Weekly about how he felt bad that she had gone from minor celebrity to “being a member of the biggest family in the world.”

Due to constantly being harassed and written about by the press, he explained that Meghan became “paranoid” since she was repeatedly stalked by drones and vehicles, making a nightmare out of her daily life.

When Meghan Markle finally moved to England full-time, she turned into a Rapunzel of sorts, hidden away from her friends and family, trapped behind the walls of Buckingham Palace. She spoke about this in the Netflix documentary “Harry & Meghan,” discussing that she couldn’t easily leave the palace.

She shared that even grabbing a quick meal with her loved ones was forbidden, and it was impossible to “call an Uber to the palace.” When approaching people in the firm to see if she could go on outings, she was often met with the response that she was “oversaturated” and that even though she hadn’t left the house in months, it was better for her to stay behind the palace walls.

Davies shared that when Markle spent time in Toronto, she maintained a normal life despite being a celebrity by going grocery shopping. Markle’s former security team didn’t allow this, and the actress had a great time going on shopping trips with Davies, who commented that Buckingham Palace was “controlling the PR” once Markle was permanently in the UK.

Before entering royal life, Meghan Markle admitted in September 2017 that she had no idea what to expect. Speaking to Vanity Fair, she explained that she started out naive and went through a learning curve of the process, adding that she didn’t have “any understanding of just what it would be like.”

Since Harry had experienced this situation multiple times with ex-girlfriends, he told the press that he tried to warn Meghan about this beforehand, but that no matter how many conversations you have about a topic like this and how much you try to prepare, you can still be “totally unprepared” for the storm that was coming.

Facing racism and constant criticism while experiencing her numerous mental health struggles, the Duchess soon realized that this lifestyle wasn’t a healthy fit for her. After leaving the palace with Harry, she happily moved on to a less scrutinized life with her family in Montecito, California, with more privacy. The family also reportedly bought a new home in Portugal.
